The first intervention at the new SYNNIKA space in Frankfurt am Main’s Central Station district is an installation by feminist collective artist Claire Fontaine entitled OK NO. Conceived for the window of the SYNNIKA space is a neon sign flashing alternatively the words ›ok‹ and ›no‹ in colours reminiscent of traffic lights. By associating the green light to NO and the red light to OK the sign reverses our daily traffic experience and draws attention to very different antagonisms such as formulated in three text piles offering to the spectator the following writings by the artist: While You Read These Lines (2016), May Our Enemies Not Prosper (2016) and The Luxury of Making Sense (2018). Exhibited in spray painted columns that will disintegrate progressively as the sheets of paper are taken away. Behind Claire Fontaine’s installation in the vitrine window SYNNIKA will host a range of discussion events during the following weeks.
Claire Fontaine was founded in 2004 in Paris, currently living and working in Palermo. Her practice ranges from sculpture to installation, from painting to text and video. She describes herself as a »ready-made artist« problematizing the concept of authorship and traditional forms of artistic subjectivization. Claire Fontaine also experiments with collective protocols of production, hijacks and the distribution of intellectual and private property.
SYNNIKA is an experimental space for practice and theory in Frankfurt am Main's Central Station district. SYNNIKA itself has evolved from the engagement with drastic urban developments of recent years. The space is located in the ground-floor of the NIKA.haus, a former office and store building at the intersection of Niddastrasse and Karlstraße. Through the initiative of its current residents the building was collectivized via integration into the trans-regional Syndicate of Tenements. As isolating as the current urban realities might appear to its inhabitants, they are at the same time globally comparable. Thus we are interested in linking up with protagonists from different contexts. We host visual interventions, workshops, discussions, meetings and other formats relating to this common environment. SYNNIKA was initiated by the Realism Working Group in collaboration with the NIKA.haus.
SYNNIKA eröffnet im Frankfurter Bahnhofsviertel mit einer Serie von Workshops, Diskussionen und der Installation OK NO des feministischen Kollektivs Claire Fontaine. Für das Fenster des SYNNIKA-Raums entwickelte die Gruppe ein Neon-Zeichen welches abwechselnd die Worte ›ok‹ und ›no‹ aufleuchten lässt, angelehnt an die Leuchtsignale des Straßenverkehrs. Allerdings ist die Farbe Grün mit dem Wort NO verknüpft und die Farbe Rot mit OK. Das Neon-Zeichen verdreht also unsere alltägliche Farbwahrnehmung im öffentlichen Raum und knüpft so Verbindungen zu ganz unterschiedlichen Antagonismen; wie etwa denen, die auf drei Papierstapeln schriftlich formuliert sind und dem Besucher folgende Texte der Künstlerin anbieten: While You Read These Lines (2016), May Our Enemies Not Prosper (2016) und The Luxury of Making Sense (2018).
Claire Fontaine wurde 2004 gegründet und arbeitet derzeit in Palermo. Ihre Kunstpraxis umfasst Skulpturen, Installationen, Malerei, Text und Video. Claire Fontaine versteht sich als »Ready-Made Artist« und problematisiert in ihrer Arbeit immer wieder den Begriff der Autorenschaft sowie tradierte Formen künstlerischer Subjektivierung. Dabei experimentiert sie mit kollektiven Produktionsprotokollen, Détournements und verschiedenen Konzepten der Verteilung intellektuellen und privaten Eigentums.
SYNNIKA ist ein experimenteller Raum für Praxis und Theorie im Frankfurter Bahnhofsviertel am Main. SYNNIKA ist entstanden aus der Auseinandersetzung mit den drastischen urbanen Entwicklungen der letzten Jahre. Der Raum befindet sich im Erdgeschoss eines ehemaligen Büro- und Geschäftsgebäudes an der Kreuzung Niddastraße und Karlstraße. Durch die Initiative seiner aktuellen Bewohnerinnen wurde das Gebäude über dessen Eingliederung in das überregionale Mietshäuser-Syndikat kollektiviert und in das NIKA.haus umgewandelt. Auch wenn die gegenwärtigen urbanen Realitäten zunehmend für Isolation und Vereinzelung stehen, werden sie gleichzeitig auf globaler Ebene immer vergleichbarer und nähern sich an. Wir sind daher interessiert Verbindungen mit Protagonistinnen aus unterschiedlichen Kontexten herzustellen und Installationen, Workshops, Diskussionen und andere Formate der Zusammenkunft auszurichten, die sich auf diese gemeinsame Umwelt beziehen. SYNNIKA wurde initiiert von der Realism Working Group in Zusammenarbeit mit dem NIKA.haus.
